According to ESPN, some baseball owners want to implement a salary cap after the crazy spending of the New York Yankees during these offseason. Is it good for baseball? We have to understand that baseball is a business and the owners are the most savvy business people. Some owners say they can't keep up with other club's spending and they cannot win for that reason. Is it true? Last season we had several teams with low revenue posibilities competing in the playoffs and on to September. Do we really need a salary cap? Maybe.
My suggestion to MLB and the owners: if you want to implement a salary cap, then make sure the money is spent entiretely on baseball operations; make sure that the money is put in the field. Imagine baseball creates a salary cap of say $75 millions a year, and teams like the Florida Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals (just to name a new) decide they will only have a payroll of $50 millions a year, despite de cap. Is this fair? I would support a salary cap only and only if there is a minimum salary cap impose as well. We need to make owners spend the money on the field and stop getting their pockets full from revenue sharing.
Salary cap is a delicate issue. The owners asking for it believe the actual system is unfair to them. In reality, the ball is in their hands: make the right call.
